  • Come celebrate the VIP kickoff of Montgomery County’s premiere Black cultural event, the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival! Doors open for dinner at 5, followed by an evening that showcases our area’s legendary talent and most dynamic newcomers. The show kicks off with America’s Got Talent Sensation Kelvin Dukes, followed by Daryl Davis’ second-annual tribute to the Du-Drop Inn of Emory Grove — featuring blues icon Jenny Langer on lead vocals. We’ll cap off the festivities with a dance contest, a best-dressed contest, and then dance the night away to the iconic Chuck Brown Band!

  • The Scotland Interfaith Breakfast is bringing the community together on Sunday, June 16, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Montgomery County is diverse, and we aim to unite everyone with a common goal of fostering dialogue around shared values and hospitality.

    Leaders from various religions in the area will speak, and there will be singing and praise dancing performances during the service. After the service, ticket holders will have breakfast available, with vegetarian and Kosher options to cater to all dietary needs!

    Purchasing a ticket and joining us in person provides the opportunity to connect, learn from each other and different faiths, fellowship over a meal, and enjoy each other's company along with wonderful performances. For those who cannot join in person, we will livestream the service. A Zoom link will be available for free to ensure everyone has access to interfaith messages.

  • Join Scotland legend Eric Smith, who played for Georgetown University in the 1982 NCAA championship game against Michael Jordan, for a clinic designed for boys and girls. The clinic will break into age groups, focusing on fundamental skills and what it takes to become a champion. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in autograph sessions with some of Eric’s friends from college and professional basketball. The event will feature special guests, including NBA draft pick Ed Spriggs and Winston Churchill coach Dave Blumenthal, among others.

  • Hosted by Winston Churchill High School Hall of Famer, the professional quarterback Jimmy Kemp, this session will break into age groups and provide drills in both offense and defense. Jimmy will be joined by Keandre Jones of the Washington Commanders.

  • Calling all road runners and walkers of all ages and skills to the DC area’s only 5K road race held on the national holiday of Juneteenth. The course begins and ends at Bells Mills Elementary School, where Scotland’s children have attended since the late 1960s, and it passes the 100- year-old Scotland AME Zion Church along the way. Hills are minimal on this course, so it’s a nice place to set a PR!

  • A century ago, the area in and around Cabin John Village and the Cabin John Regional Park, spanning hundreds of acres, was a vibrant Black community that came to be known as Scotland. Across Montgomery County, more than 40 other Black were also settled as centers of Black culture and worship. Local volunteers and historians will retell those stories in words, pictures, videos, and artifacts for a day-long examination of a history that can never be forgotten.

  • What was your favorite ride back in the day? A ’57 Chevy? A shiny Corvette? Or maybe the original ’65 Mustang? More than 40 vintage vehicles from some of the most elite garages in Potomac and Bethesda will be on display to benefit the rebuilding of the Scotland AME Zion Church.   • With a focus on the unique needs of African American and minority communities, this area will feature over a dozen specialized hospitals, clinics, and healthcare professionals. Highlights include the American Heart Association demonstrating hands-only CPR, and the National Institutes of Health Blood Bank providing educational materials on sickle cell disease while recruiting blood and platelet donors. Additionally, several organizations will showcase their services, covering mental health, relationship health, stress management, and more. As a Montgomery County event, the Montgomery County Sexual Health & Wellness Services will also be present to offer information on their available services for residents.   • What does Juneteenth mean? What is the holiday’s origin and history? What are the colors and themes that bring this new national holiday to life? These are the questions and answers that will be expressed in this celebration of art by our area’s schoolchildren at the Cabin John Village shopping center.

  • When the Scotland Community was at risk of being eliminated by socioeconomic forces in the 1960s, it was the surrounding faith community who stepped in with a “Save Our Scotland” campaign. In 2023, a similar campaign, “The Second Century Project,” was formed by the Scotland AME Zion Church to bring together leaders in faith, business, and the broader community. This area of the festival will be filled with fun and games under the theme of “What it Means to be a Neighbor!”

  • Calling all baseball and softball players ages 7 to 13 for this opportunity to learn from professional and the highest-level amateur players in our area. Hosted by Big Train Base Ball and the staff of Scotland Storm — an education and exercise program in the Scotland community — this clinic will cover hitting, throwing, fielding, and running. The coaches will include members of the Big Train Base Ball team, as well as former Major League players from the DC region.

  • From the 1930s to the 1950s, when more than 40 Black communities staked their place in

    Montgomery County society, summer baseball was central to the weekend experience. This

    game — including an elaborate opening ceremony — honors “Pint” Isreal, the biggest star of

    these summer sandlots, as well as the Scotland Eagles, and other area semi-professional

    baseball teams. This experience is sure to be a sell-out, so book your tickets early.
